Body Shaming at the Border and Other Tall Tales
A morning that had begun with the noblest of intentions — to make the most of the temporary freedom that AI so generously grants me (meaning it’s currently nicking my job) — was rudely interrupted by the “sensational” revelation that the US State Department had apparently advised consular officers to have a quick look at the waistlines of immigration visa applicants.
The chubby ones, we’re told, might be turned away from the land of the American Dream as potential burdens on that famously efficient and compassionate healthcare system. Naturally, the ever-thriving journalistic sensationalism stirred the pot further, implying that this rule could soon apply to tourists as well. So, that stroke suffered mid-jog in Central Park — already frowned upon, mind you — might soon be reclassified as yet another act of aggression from those overweight foreign invaders, deliberately keeling over just to drain the American taxpayer.
Tape measures and bathroom scales, then, will come in handy not only for ensuring your suitcase fits airline restrictions, but also for taking note of thighs, bums, bellies and body fat percentages. At customs, after being thoroughly scanned and humiliated in the walk of shame — plastic bags on your feet under the metal detector, of course — you’ll pass beneath the stern gaze of someone fiddling with a tape measure, trying to decide whether your proportions are acceptable or offensively extra-large.
Assuming, of course, that this is merely a wilfully distorted interpretation of US immigration rules — in the current cesspool of nonsense, anything seems believable — I’ll still take away one valuable lesson and happily share it: wasting time debating such nonsense is precisely what the far right has been working towards for years. After all, let’s be honest — nothing beats a good, old-fashioned doomscroll, does it? (n.z.b.)
